FREETOWN, Sierra Leone — More than 40 local key nursing staff packed the telemedicine center of the China-Sierra Leone Friendship Hospital on July 17 for a landmark Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) training program, delivered by the 27th Chinese Medical Team from Hunan Province. Combining live-streamed lectures by TCM experts in Hunan with on-site hands-on instruction, the session walked participants through acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping, scraping, and tuina massage — demystifying millennia-old techniques in plain bilingual explanations bringing millennia-old TCM wisdom to the clinical front lines of West Africa.
The training's impact was immediate. During a live demonstration, an 18-year-old patient with six months of recurrent knee pain was treated with Fu's Subcutaneous Needling — her pain eased significantly within two minutes, and she regained full mobility on the spot. "This curriculum fills a real gap in our pain management capacity," said Zainab Bangura, a registered nurse at the hospital. The program marks a deliberate shift in China-Africa health cooperation: moving beyond direct treatment to building a self-sustaining local workforce capable of delivering affordable, low-side-effect TCM therapies across West Africa.
